Welcome!

Welcome to my blog. I am so excited that you stopped by and I hope that you enjoy your journey with me. My name is Nicole Seitz and I am a Liberal Studies Major, this is my first year second term in the program here at Brandman University. When I grow up I want to be a Second Grade Teacher at the school I currently work at, McKinley Elementary.

How Can I Become A Better Scholarly Researcher and User of Information?

I believe that I can become a better information researcher by furthering my technology skills. In this day and age the digital technology is advancing faster than I can keep up with.
A 1999 report from the National Research Council promotes the concept of “fluency” with information technology and delineates several distinctions useful in understanding relationships among information literacy, computer literacy, and broader technological competence.” (pg. 3) http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/standards/standards.pdf

I believe that I can become a better information researcher by accessing needed information effectively and efficiently. I also believe I need to expand my research base beyond the WWW into books, articles, and journals.
“The information literate student retrieves information online or in person using a variety of methods. “ (pg. 10) http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/standards/standards.pdf

Lastly I believe that I can become a better researcher by understanding, extracting, recording, and managing the information and its sources. In researching I know that one of my weaknesses is citations. This is a combination of misunderstanding and not taking the initiative to learn the format. I hope that through this class I will get a better understanding of citations and how to format them correctly.
“Differentiates between the types of sources cited and understands the elements and correct syntax of a citation for a wide range of resources…Records all pertinent citation information for future reference.” (pg. 10-11) http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/standards/standards.pdf

  1. Nicole it is a pleasure to meet you. I look forward to reading more of your blogs and gaining a better understanding of research. I think this class is going to be a bit of a challenge for me. I wish you success in this class as well as your goals. We need more great teachers.

  2. Nicole,

With the enormous amount of information provided to us on the WWW it is harder to determine the source of the information. One great thing I'm hoping this class will teach us is how to narrow down our sources of information. I agree with you, the information presented to us grows at such fast pace that it makes it difficult to keep up with. Thanks for sharing some personal goals.

  3. Hi Nicole!
We have a bit in common. I am also new to Brandman, this is actually my first session. I, also, am a Liberal Studies Major with an interest in teaching second (or first) grade. I love this age group. They are still very curious and willing to explore and learn. Writing citations is a challenge for me as well. Hopefully, this course will help us strengthen our citation weaknesses!
    Best of luck, Jennifer Ruttschow
